Abstract The purpose of this research is to improve understanding and communication of form generation process through a comparative study of theme and concept of design. For the purpose, definitions and roles of the two subjects were developed by examining writings and projects of architectural design. Realization of design themes through design concepts can be the goal of design works. Design themes are thought to be generated by architects' understanding of given issues and their viewpoints toward the role of architecture. Design concepts are basic frameworks of architectural form or seeds of created forms. Themes are repeatedly thought over through design process, while concepts are initiated by imagination and developed toward final forms. Themes are described in languages encompassing the wide realm of human thoughts required for architecture, while design concepts are formal diagrams generated by and transformed from themes and thoughts of designers, which are developed to architectural forms through concept design process.
