Abstract The purpose of this research is to find out the functional changes in the National Museum and the characteristics of the spatial compositions according to these variations. As for the methods of the analysis in this research is done by using 'space syntax' which allows to carry out the quantitative ways of analysing in space. Above all, the investigation on the characteristics of the spatial composition is performed by its time frame, then the research is focused whether the variations correspond with the functions of exhibition/display together with educational purpose for the public which are the one of the ultimate purpose of the national museums.
The result of this research is as follows ; 1) The national museum holds functions of display in the ways of educations and public interests. The current operational programs that provided for the public have improved and revitalized compared to the past. 2) Since year 2000, the public spaces in the national museum have been extended in scale. However, the characteristics of spatial compositions are similar to what have been like in the past. Therefore the frequency of the comings and goings made to permanent exhibition rooms are relatively weakened. 3) The museums where permanent exhibition rooms are linked closely to the public spaces shows more frequent approaches made to the permanent exhibition rooms. In other words to design the national museum which corresponds with the modern society it requires to locate temporary exhibition rooms, which lead majority of the visitors with a specific purpose, in a place with relatively low accessibility, at the same time locate permanent exhibition rooms near public spaces.
