Abstract The opera house acoustics in an opera house was evaluated to investigate the effect of the stage view on the perception of the acoustical quality at various seats. Nine seats from the opera house were selected for auditory experiments according to the seating area distribution and the different acoustical parameters such as RT and 1-IACCE3. Recorded music, convolved with binaural room impulse responses, was presented with and without visual images of the stage using two loudspeakers with stereo dipole system. Subjects were asked to assess the auditory/visual descriptors and overall impression of the music at each seat. Results show that good visual input helps produce a favorable impression of the acoustics, but a limited view degrades acoustical impression. The acoustical parameters in the tested seats were also measured to investigate the relationship between the acoustical parameters and the seat preferences.
