Abstract |
The effect of building facade and balcony design on the reduction of traffic noise was investigated. Traffic noise of an apartment complex was measured along with computer simulation called 'SoundPLAN' to predict the traffic noise of the apartment house which is located in the road side. Then, the efficiency of the shape of the balcony for reducing traffic noise was determined using a 1:50 scale model with one spark source. It was found that parapet design is more effective to reduce the traffic noise than canopy design. From the measurements of the parapet and absorptive materials in the scale model, a maximum noise reduction of 26dB was obtained. This method of traffic noise reduction is particularly useful in high-rise buildings where tall barriers cannot be built. In further studies, it is needed to use the line source in a scale model test to obtain the accurate results. |
