Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze Giuseppe Terragni's Milan Housings in the aspect of formal composition to illustrate its methodological characteristics and to verify individuality of his architecture in the 1930's Italian Rationalism. The Italian rationalist architecture led by Terragni developed various formal experiments to construct the Italian speciality through modern vocabularies and construction technology. In the urban housing design, he visualized clear geometric forms and modern systems with 'symmetrical mass composition', contrasted to the existing contexts. The exterior composition is expressed by neutral square-frame as an abstracted factor. Terragni's design method is peculiar in aspect to strictness and clearness of geometrical abstraction, and new interpretation about conventional urban contexts.
