Abstract The history of ski resort in Korea had begun with the Yongpyung Resort in 1975. In the last 30 years, the ski resort industry has grown rapidly as a result the number of visitors has now reached more than 5 million per year. Due to the industry growth, also grown resort market has brought the diversity of demands, such as the keener market competition and the switchover from the seller's market to the buyer's market, etc. The purpose of this study on the ski resort facilities is (1) to do a case study of ski resorts based on the segmented markets, and (2) to explore suitable ski resort planning guidelines. From the extensive study on the ski resorts, it was found; (1) ski resorts in Korea mainly reflected the conditions of the location, but hardly reflected the segmented market. (2) The Yongpyung Resort and the Kangwonland Resort are close to the ski resort for the expert skiers, but the Sungwoo and the Phoenix Park Resort are close to the ski resort for the beginner skiers. And the Muju Resort is a combination of both types. The study results implied that for the success of the ski resort development, breaking away from multi-target market strategy and applying segmented market strategy must be put in use in planning techniques.
