Abstract This study is focused on the solar access of apartment houses according to site planning. The problems related with solar access could occurred due to shortage of sunshine in apartment buildings. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to evaluate solar access in accordance with building codes and to suggest guidelines of site design for apartment planning. In this study, sunshine conditions of four apartment planning types were analyzed : plate parallel type, plate courtyard type, tower parallel type, and plate-tower parallel type. Then, sunshine hours were calculated by using the computer simulation according to building orientation, height, length, and minimal distance between buildings in the building codes. The results show that, plate parallel type is the most efficient out of the four types. Plate courtyard type and tower parallel type are worse than plate parallel type and plate-tower parallel type.
