Abstract This current work is dealing with common space adjoining in-/out-door in multiple dwelling housing. The importance of the common space was comparatively less emphasized compared to designing of out-door public space and private unit house. We have categorized the common space by its use in detail. The object was to reveal the relationship between the physical formation of common space and its specific use, and aimed to build the indicator for the planning of multiple dwelling housing.
The common space in front of the unit house categorized into two types; corridor type and staircase type in general. The physical formation of corridor type was grouped into seven types by the composition of the front and side walls. The physical formation of staircase type was grouped into four types by the position of core and the existence of window. The common space in front of the main entrance in the multiple dwelling housing was grouped into six types by the constitution of unit house, access system, management office and attached space.
The occupying stuffs in the indoor common space showed significant relation with unit the combination and the number of unit house. Moreover, physical formation of corridor and staircase type showed more significant relation with the occupying stuffs in the indoor common space. It shows that the quality factors such as physical formation have more direct impact on the use of common space than the quantity factors such as unit size. The common space adjoining in-/out-door connects interior and exterior space, interfacing public and private space and also improving the life quality in the unit house. Further research is needed for the better use of common space in the unit house so as to improve the life quality.
