Abstract |
Apartment buildings, the most popular housing type in Korea nowadays, is causing various problems such as excessive concentration of population, traffic jam, monotonous and closed view, non-human scale building masses and poor street activities. In order to alleviate these problems, the study intended to propose block housing as a new type of urban housing, having characteristics of both court-type and street-type housing. Through the extensive literature review, the main research results were explored as followings; Firstly, in order to raise quality of residence, it is necessary to provide private gardens at low story levels at buildings, a court for parking areas and high level space for artificial lands. Making a walking space square, pilotis and artificial land is good approach for closeness to land. Secondly, to activate socialization in housing, it requires puting various public facilities like α-room, a meeting room for residents and a multi-purpose room at one united space. Thirdly, to avoid extreme urbanization, it is necessary to make a plan, considering various arrangement of buildings blocks conforming to existing topography, open views and skyline. Finally, well-designed park areas at inner court functioned, reducing street level noise. In conclusion, it suggested that urban block housing be used to improve the environmental quality, facilitating street level activity and provide human scale housing for urban residents in metropolitan areas. |
