Abstract The ability to recognize properties and characteristics unforeseen in the early stage of design, namely shape emergence, would be considered one of vital aspects of human visual perception in creative thinking. Through the emergence theory, which finds unexpected shapes from the designer’s intended drawings and sketches and then embodies the shapes, the creative human behavior in design has been explored. Depending on the designer’s intentions, this kind of emergent shapes comes up in various forms. This research is aimed at shedding light on the theory of Mutation Shape Emergence, a concept rooted in shape emergence. Based on Design model which proposed before, representation system is developed by using the concept of infinitive maximal lines and new concept of mutation operators. This paper shows examples of mutational emergent shape symbolizing a process by newly set rules. At last we will suggest a prototype of new CAAD system, MSDS(Mutational Shape Discovery System), based on the theory of Mutation Shape Emergence.
