Abstract The aims of this study are to verify the architectural design characteristics of the mixed-use buildings and districts around the railway station in Japan. To achieve these purposes, the architectural characteristics of 16 examples have been surveyed, and the design characteristics are compared.
The results from this study are as follows :
(1) The development trends around railway station are gradually expand away from railway station and proceed mixed-use building and district as a renewing the old downtown. (2) The vertical and automatic movement systems are applied to connect the building and district considering the level differences and distances. The concourses and decks in conjunction area are opened for assembling and distributing the peoples, it makes an ecological garden and symbolic plaza. (3) Offices, commercial facilities, hotels and housings are introduced in mixed-use buildings and districts around railway station, and the housings are located faraway from station as an isolated block-type.
