Abstract The purpose of this treatise is to examine the characteristics of stage types in the art of public performance. I will devide the stage types into three categories-Arena stage, Thrust stage, and Proscenium stage-attempting to describe the distinctive characteristics of each stage type. First, Arena stage places a circular or rectangular play space in the center of the theater, with the seats for the public around it. This arrangement is similar to the stadium type of setting in the baseball game or boxing match. This type of stage exhibits a conception of anti-proscenium stage. Second, Thrust stage is like a combination of Proscenium and Arena stage, with the three sides of the stage surrounded by the public seats. It is the form of stage that is the most widely used among the three types. Finally, Proscenium stage presents a huge frame in front of the audience so that the audience views the stage directly. Much like a picture frame, this stage provides the audience with a frame through which they devise their painted perspectives. The art of public performance, which is to be done by the act of presentation, is a kind of art that establishes the meaning based on the communication between the actor and the audience, unlike the works of art such as literature or painting. In other words, the basis of the public performance might be the communication between the actor and the audience.
