Abstract The mediatheque designed in the late 20th century which we can call the origin from the library being characterized by some distinctive trait, the term 'character' was introduced. To compare mediatheque with library using the architectural character as its analysis tool is the main theme of this paper. The concept of character which makes beings of every kind claim upon us, its theoretical interpretation frame with architectural meaning and the analysis of meditheque through the application of this interpretation frame suggested are done for the purpose of this paper. The character interpretation frame of architecture itself consists in two components with one related to function and another to its sociocultural symbolic meaning.
Within this frame, the mediatheques distinguish themselves quite clearly from their predecessors, libraries and this applies both to their own programme and to their sociocultural contextual situation were analyzed. Also with this case study the character interpretation frame in terms of the functional aspects of the library and sociocultural symbolic aspects is shown to be the effective way to interpret the special features of case architecture. The knowledge based programme was changed into the user-need based programme was clarified with the mediatheque's being broadened into the limitless information network of real information world in sociocultural character. Being suitable for these contemporary needs the meditheque has been conceptualizing as a growing public being with open spatial character.
