| Abstract |
As a millenium city, Hanoi has various types of urban houses with high density. In the terms of the era when they were built and the forms, Hanoi urban houses can be categorized as several types. In this paper, we classified them into eight types; traditional tube houses, modern tube houses, contemporary tube houses, French villas, mixed-type houses, apartment of 1950's, apartment houses of 1970's and apartment houses of 2000's. With field surveys of 2005 and 2006 and reviewing the former researches on Hanoi tube houses, we got an idea of that all of these house types have an attic and a courtyard in common. Though the attic and the courtyard have transformed over the course of time, we can identify that the essential characteristics of each spatial element are still alive in Hanoi urban houses. |
