Abstract The purpose of this study is to establish approaches to architectural planning for complex space in public libraries based on the analysis of the relationship of complex space through space syntax. For this study, 10 public libraries were selected and analysed. Each of complex space is categorized into an Electronic Reading Room, an Exhibition / Performance Room, an Education / Meeting Room, and a Service Area for the space-ratio and the space syntax analysis.
The results of this study showed that: first, complex space in public libraries played much of a role though their space-ratio is not very high; second, complex space in public libraries were closed-shaped in general; third, the intelligibility of complex space in public libraries was satisfactory by and large; fourth, on one hand, Electronic Reading Rooms and Exhibition / Performance Rooms had good accessibility due to large openness. On the other hand, Education / Meeting Rooms and Service Areas had not good accessibility because they were separated from other space; fifth, two most topologically centered complex space were Digital Resource Rooms and Exhibition Rooms.
