Abstract This paper proposes a strength formulae that evaluates the ultimate strength of T-joints made of the longitudinal double plates to cold-formed square hollow structural sections(HSS) welded connections. The T-joints had a configuration that a branch member used to longitudinal plate(single or double) to the main chord in the plane. This study focused on the longitudinal double plate T-joints governed by the chord flange plastification. Test results, it was also found from experimental study that the strength of connections increased as β and gap increased. For T-joints, the governing failure mode was chord flange plastification for β<0.80, while combined failure of chord flange plastification and chord web buckling governed for β=0.80. For the connections with HSS chord, double-plate connecting element, a yield line analysis considering the flexural plastic deformation in the chord flange was used to evaluate the connection strength for β≤0.80. The analytically derived strengths described above showed good agreements with the experimental results. The strength calculation of the longitudinal double-plate T-joints with chord flange failure is proposed, based on the yield line analysis for 2γ≥30 and 0.25≤β≤0.80.
