Abstract Human being analyzes and structuralizes a new object on the basis of active organizational expression of past experiences to represent world outside. This human thinking process can be explained by schema 'internalized mental images'.
The purpose of this study is understanding the thinking process of architects on setting the form and concept during design process by speculating schema 'internalized mental images' and memories of past experiences. The past research focused on the definition and characteristics of schema based upon Kant's epistemology. The result showed that schema is a rule to set any possible form based on the concept, and mediates between intuition and concept, and what exists in the pure sensible concept is not the form of the object but the schema.
In this study, the meaning of the memory schema could be newly defined with the basic theory of Bergson's memory and image, and then the application methods and cases were studied. As result of this study, we could find out that memory and image acts substantially on architects' design thinking, and the memory schema as mental image deformed by memory could be defined. Many cases of architectural thinking with the memory schema can be found in many architects' works.
