Abstract This research is to find out the characteristics of the plastic construction which Elementary Architecture has pursued. The representative essays and manifestos and architectures of Elementarism, such as Van Doesburg's ‘The Will to Style', ‘The new aesthetics and its realization', ‘Towards collective construction', ‘- ㅁ+ =R4', ‘Towards plastic architecture', ‘Painting: from composition towards counter-composition', ‘Elementarism', and Private House and Studio House are analyzed in detail.
Based on the analysis, the following results had been obtained.
Elementary Architecture adopted the new strategies to give the plastic expression by means of elemantalization and counter-construction. One of new plastic methods was to break down the cubic figure in the forms of the division and the detachment. The other was to embody the counter-construction concept in the various ways. The counter-construction was experimented in the forms of multi-faceted, multi-layers, suspending, and dual structure in Theo van Doesburg's Private House and Studio House. And the plastic construction in Elementary Architecture had the characteristics such as ambiguous boundary, dynamic equilibrium, anti-gravity, and formless which were related to the contemporary plastic architecture.
