| Abstract |
As our cities increasingly demand good urban design practices, better urban design education is also required from many disciplines, affecting the quality of the city. This paper examines three types of academic programs in urban design education. Based on the content analysis of urban design curricula in the US universities, this paper delineates three types as 1) independent urban design degrees (MUD); 2) complimentary urban design certificates to architecture, planning, and landscape architecture degrees (CUD); 3) urban design emphasis in the existing degrees related to the built environment, for example in the urban planning degree (MUP-UD). The research findings point among others that while MUD and CUD largely aim to enhance UD education for design professionals in 1 to 2 years, MUP-UD tends to serve those who are interested in policy or research aspects of urban design with 2 year degree programs. Educational missions were very similar in each type, pursuing the better quality of our built environment. The goal of this paper is to provide a meaningful reference in reinforcing future urban design education in Korean universities, which would be the next phase of this paper. |
