Abstract |
The reasonable modelling tools and structural analysis method about masonry structures are required for the preservation and restoration of historical masonry stone structures. But, the demands for the comprehensive and accurate analysis of masonry structures still impose a significant challenge to engineers because of the complexity and particular patterns of structural behavior related to the traditional construction techniques. To solve these problems, this study presents the discrete element method. This method provides the discontinuum models to represent explicitly the blocks and joints of masonry structures and a powerful tool for the detailed modelling of architectural components such as masonry stone pagoda. Therefore, we evaluate stress variations that happen to each stone element when vertical load is loaded in the masonry structures. Finally, we examine stress redistribution phenomenon, displacements and collapse shapes by durability reduction, fragility of ground, and earthquake. |
