Abstract Identifying dummy activities is not an easy task in creating scheduling networks by Activity-On-Arrow(AOA) method. Two typical types of dummy activities are the logical dummy and the numbering dummy. The logical dummy is somewhat difficult to locate in a network, while the numbering dummy is relatively easy to do. This paper proposes a new heuristic method to identify logical dummies when an Activity-on-Node(AON) network is translated to an AOA network. The heuristic method consists of finding simple logical dummies from an AON network and eliminating redundant dummies through considering cross connections between activities. An example schedule is employed to evaluate the proposed method.
