Abstract The aims of this study is to verify the visual characteristics of the 'Gil‘ and 'Ma-dang' in traditional villages. To achieve these purposes, two representative traditional villages have been surveyed and taken pictures at an intervals of 10m along the several road, and the view blockage are analyzed according to sky, building and ground ratio.
The results from this study are as follows :
(1) The view blockage ratio are different according to the hierarchies of housing classes and the characteristics of the 'Gil‘ and 'Ma-dang'. (2) The building up reasons of village(artificially built and naturally gathered village), the topological shape of village(flat or slope), and the hierarchies and location of 'Gil' and 'Ma-dang' are most important factors affecting the visual properties. (3) 'An-Gil' has high sky ratio and low blockage, and 'Golmok-Gil' which is surrounded by constant wall has high building ratio and low ground ratio.
