Abstract Rework continues to impact both cost and schedule performance throughout the construction industry. Its direct costs alone often tally to 5% of total construction costs. Analyzing the data obtained from 181 owner reported construction projects in the Construction Industry Institute database, this paper assesses the influence of rework on construction cost performance based on various categories of projects. In addition, it identifies sources of this rework permitting further analyses and tries to provide rework reduction initiatives. The results from this study establish that the influence of rework differ by project characteristics and that sources of rework having a relatively greater influence than other sources are not significantly different across different project categories. By recognizing these influences of rework and its sources, the construction industry will be able to reduce rework, ultimately improving project cost performance.
