Abstract The perception has been discussed on the architectural forms due to the structural requisites for a long time. From the contemporary architecture, it becomes free from the subordinate relationship with the structural problems, with various approaches. In the result, the building appearance and surface shows the tendency to be extended to the other design areas separate with the structure, paying attention to the expression and independence. In this context, the surface is realized in the form of organic and sensibility-focused digital media, on the basis of the IT. However, some building construction shows the tendency of being focused on the fragmentary decorative elements or modal expression rather than on the expression as the essential media.
In order to react to the expressionism and independence of the essential surface, it is necessary to more actively specify and apply the digital media to the building construction. What we need to focus on is that we may strengthen such possibility by establishing the environment with the IT means such as ubiquitous. This paper presents the following points to define and complement the directions for the contemporary building surface expression in the digital media context.
First, to supplement the superficial attributes of the surface lean to the visual stimulation, it is required to configure the electric digital media, in order to pursue the extension to the interactive interface through the interactive building surface. Second, the realization of the ubiquitous environment will be considered as a remedial actions to be taken, to meet the desire for the sensibility and to extend the possibility of the organic surface expression with the contemporary architecture's pursuit. Third, to realize the aforementioned two points, it is necessary to coordinate and share the opinions with the expert group who will support the digital media technology from the designing stage, and to take the changed architectural design process into account for this purpose.
