Abstract Development of new light sources has constantly grown for a high efficacy and long life. And the optical design of luminaires has been also developed for the reflection and refraction of light mechanism for such light source. The study of optical design for luminaires has been developed with activity for the reflection of light mechanism. But it has been not enough to study for the refraction of light mechanism. Therefore, this study aims to extend the refraction of light mechanism using Monte-Carlo method and Ray-tracing method to general luminaires. And, the purpose of this study is to develop the calculation process of 3 dimensional planar prism design algorithm by utilizing the results of photometric data from reflector luminaries. This study is presented optic calculation process for prism optical design of planar prism luminaries that is development of numerical model for the luminous intensity distribution by optical design of 3 dimensional planar prisms.
