Abstract In this paper 36- and 72-story tube and trussed tube system structures were designed according to the current design code and their seismic performances were evaluated by nonlinear static analysis. According to the analysis results, the tube system structures retained high over-strength; however they showed brittle failure mode due to the buckling of columns. In the case of trussed tube systems, significant increase in strength and stiffness was obtained. However the ductility was still limited due to the buckling of the braces. When buckling-restrained braces were used instead of conventional braces, inelastic deformation occurred in the lower story braces gradually spreaded to the higher stories, resulting in highly ductile behavior.
