Abstract This paper studies the effect of types of vector norms in maximum stiffness problem. The objective of maximum stiffness problem is to minimize the displacement and optimization method is needed for this purpose in order to obtain the structure with maximum stiffness shape. The steepest descent method is introduced to carry out the optimization procedure in this study. Displacements for structure with multiple degrees of freedom which has been modeled using finite element will be expressed in the form of vector. In order to measure the size of vector quantity, vector norms are used. The use of different types of vector norms might yield different results in maximum stiffness problem with shape as the design variable. The results show that norm (1) is the most effective norm to be used in representing the maximum stiffness shape.
