Abstract The harmfulness of HCHO (Formaldehyde) and VOCs (Volatile Organics Compounds) in indoor is important problem at the new houses and residential buildings. Specially, the concentration of HCHO and VOCs in indoor is showed great difference according to construction progress. This paper is performed to investigate the concentration of HCHO and VOCs according to finishes and construction. This paper provides the fundamental data for selecting finishes considering indoor air quality. The field measuring and small chamber experiments are conducted to evaluate the concentration of finishing materials according to construction in the new house located in Ansan, Korea from 27 September to 22 December, 2005. The HCHO concentration was showen below the standard all construction process. But the TVOC concentration showed the great difference according to construction process. Specially, When the furniture, built-in chest of drawers and art-wall paper are installed, the TVOC concentration was high concentration. The TVOC concentration is affected by flooring and wall adhesive.
