Abstract In this study vertical push-over analysis was conducted to investigate the resistance of steel moment frames for progressive collapse. The analysis was carried out by increasing the vertical displacement in the location of the removed column and the vertical load in all spans corresponding to the increase of vertical displacement. Various steel moment resisting frame buildings were designed by changing the number of stories and the length of spans. The analysis results showed that the load resisting capacity increased as the number of story increased, but the opposite was true for the limit of the vertical displacement. As the length of span increased the load resisting capacity decreased but the limit of a vertical displacement increased. Based on the analysis results it was concluded that a push-down analysis could be a valuable tool to investigate the progressive collapse potential of buildings, but that for more accurate prediction of progressive collapse the results from the static method need to be compared and refined by the results from another analysis procedures.
