Abstract |
Most studies on the existing traditional residential space are analysed based on thoughts focusing on the socio-cultural backgrounds of the times. The spatial configuration analysis enumerate characteristics of distribution, plane figures and solid figures, and the characteristics of 'transitional space' in spatial configuration. However, even the terminology 'transitional space'is used with the words 'inter-space' and 'intermediate space', which all refer to most of ambiguous spaces. Furthermore, the studies on spatial configuration were difficult to conduct, due to lack of quantitative and objective methods of analysis. However, recently, the use of 'space syntax', which is an analyzing method of spatial configuration, is solving these problems. This method, however, requires criteria of application based on the characteristics of the objects and cases for analysis, because the residential space requires the understanding of the space usage and space users' life styles, and also requires the establishment of criteria for the analysis. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to establish the concept of threshold space by comparingtransitional space and threshold space, and to analyze the characteristics of threshold of Korean traditional residential space by establishing the criteria of analyzing methods. Finally, The results of case studies are as follows: First, Madang in Korean traditional residential spaces was a main space, not a transitional space that the existing studies assert. Second, the existence of threshold space was found, which connects each Madang, and each Chae, and blocks outsiders from insiders, and forms a boundary between social classes. Third, thresholds were classified as threshold element or threshold space according to the spatial characteristics between social classes, which made it possible to analyze the roles and characteristics of threshold spaces. |
