Abstract |
What Rem Koolhaas has been most interested in about Mies van der Rohe is the experiments with different materials and colors in late 1920s through the collaboration with Lilly Reich. Especially he took notice of the soft materials such as velvet, silk, or leather, which he defined as 'flexible counter-architecture.' From the notice of these materials by Koolhaas stems the point of view of this study that separates between constructing materials and sensible materials, of which Mies interpreted by Koolhaas gave priority to the latter. The analyses of the articles, installation, and works by Koolhaas shows 1) superiority of the elements of non-architecture in the photo collage by Mies and Koolhaas, 2) non-contingent but space organizing functions of the soft materials as counter-architecture, and 3) articulation of continuous universal space into sensible places without physical boundaries by means of various surface materials. |
