Abstract This study, as a part of the Study for ‘Jinjeon’ in Joseon Dynasty Era, has herewith examined into the architectural characteristics and its space constitution of the Portrait Hall of King Tae-Jo (the Founder of the Joseon Dynasty). During the early years of the Joseon Dynasty, a total of five Portrait Halls of King Tae-Jo had been built throughout the country (likely as Junwon-jeon in Youngheung, Jipkyung-jeon in Gyungju, Kyunggi-jeon in Jeonju, Youngsung-jeon in Pyungyang, and Mokcheong-jeon in Gaeseong). While Taejo-Jinjeon built in the early stage of which Architectural Forms were different respectively in all, coming to the reign of King Se-Jong, in order to perform the ritual ceremony on the basis of Confucian Rites, the Architectural Formality had been unified. The Picture for Jinjeon arranged at that time had been recorded in the Gukjooryeui, and the basic Architectural System has ever been maintained well so far. However, in the latter term of Joseon Dynasty, the Architectural Form and its Space of the Taejo-Jinjeon had been changed for the reasons of provision against emergency, transition of Confucian ritual ceremony, fire prevention and so on.
