Title Case Studies on the Design Criteria of Outstanding Child Care Centers in Korea

Abstract Physical environment of child care center in Korea has been worse far from being in child development and growth. And Licensing standards of center need to be upgraded. So this study is to seek the design guide and characteristics of 8 outstanding child care centers in Korea as the basic data searching for upgraded standards. Here's the result of study. Firstly, age of children vary depending on the goal of center, and children under 4 ages have been cared by group size. Secondly, classroom area per child is 4.6㎡ under 3 ages equipped with diapering, food prep area, and sleeping area, and 3.0㎡ over 3 ages having with toilets. Thirdly, interior space area per child is 7.9㎡ in average, and space ratio for care, staff, service and circulation programed by 55%, 14%, 11%, and 20%. Finally, there are play yards in front, buildings in back in site layout, and there is a window between vestibule and office for supervision, and all doors have finger protection.
