Abstract With respect to punching shear strength, the effects of slab thickness and the flexural tension reinforcement ratio were not considered in the KCI-ACI Code equation, whereas they were considered in the CEB-FIP Code equation. The question is whether those effects should be considered in the design code equation from practical and economic points of view. By using the 178 concentric punching shear test data of flat plates, the KCI-ACI Code design equation for punching shear strength was evaluated. As a result of the evaluation, the current KCI-ACI Code equation may be conservative in general situations but may be liberal if applied to lightly reinforced thick slabs. Thus, a revised equation of the KCI-ACI model for the punching strength was proposed for better safety and economic design.
