Abstract As proven by the introduction of green building certification system in 2002, there are increasing concern and effort to secure a certain quality of residential environment. Above all, sunlight environment impact is one of the most important elements in residential environments, given that it is the priority element considered in environmental survey and in setting up goals under Japan's environmental housing planning process. Today, if we consider planning certified green building apartment complexes and increasing distance between two buildings excessively for sunlight environment impact, residential environment may be improved. However, it would incur economic problems, such as reduction in building density. In this respect, I believe that it is necessary to have a layout plan that improves sunlight environment impact and considers realistic applicability when planning building layout for new apartment complexes.
