Abstract A merit of the Strut-Tie model concept may be that the design engineer grasps the flow of the force in the RC members and proposes the rational reinforcing recipe through the representation process of the natural force flows. With these advantages the application of this method seems like quite easy and practical. However, if one will applies the model for the design practice, he will immediately notice several difficulties, e.g. a number of calculation steps according to the design scheme under some initial assumptions which should be checked only after several strenuous computation steps. Additionally, the result of design using Strut-Tie model indicates in some cases remarkable discrepancy with them using other building codes. The aim of this paper is to improve the applicability of the Strut-Tie model, especially for the deep beam design. For this purpose, the simply supported deep beam subjected to the uniformly distributed load was considered. As the main investigation parameter, the height-span ratio of the beam was chosen. The influence of the column-width ratio on the maximum bending moment was systematically investigated. With some modification of the model concept, design nomographs were developed, in order to simplify a number of computation steps. Design examples using the nomographs demonstrated the applicability of this method.
