Abstract This study presents the optimal design technique of gable steel frame building with tapered members. For the analysis and optimization of tapered members, the element stiffness and design code considering the tapered section are provided and the optimal design algorithm is formulated. Through this optimization algorithm, the optimal section proportions of tapered members according to design constraints and load conditions are derived, based on the minimum weight design. Also, the total weight ratios of tapered member system considering the various design variables are compared with those of prismatic member system by direct optimization method to evaluate the optimization technique of tapered gable steel building.
