Abstract Due to increasing congestion, there are now lesser space for building sites for all areas. Campuses are also struggling to secure additional space. One of the common approaches is to utilize more underground space. However, as underground space possesses its own physical and psychological problems, there are many issues that must be dealt with. Therefore, this study looks into how Korean university campuses are using their underground space, and further analyzes the user satisfaction measurement.A field study and survey has been conducted on the underground lecture rooms, libraries, exhibition facilities, and convenience facilities of eight universities. The result of the survey shows that the current rate of utilization of underground space at campuses is relatively high; most facilities, with the exception of classrooms, have received a positive response overall. However, many problems have been addressed regarding the classrooms, indicating the need of improvement for underground use.
