Abstract This study is for finding out the patterns of arrangements and shapes of soeseos in corner bracket units of dapo type Korean buildings and showing their tendencies and historical changes. Soeseo originated as a kind of ornaments imitating ha-angs or cantilever arms which were parts in bracket units of high class East Asian buildings. In corner bracet units with ha-ang, which was introduced in Yingzaofashi(營造法式), one of the oldest extant guidebooks for construction, the arrangement of ha-angs were very characteristic. Some scholars pointed out that some of the oldest extant Korean dapo buildings have corner bracket unit whose soeseo arrangement and shapes of other ornaments are resemble the ha-ang arrangement in the corner bracket Yingzaofashi, but there is no serious research on ornaments of corner bracket units. In this paper, I show the variety of soeseo design patterns in corner bracket units late Goryeo and early Joseon period, and the transformation, mix and alternation of them in middle and late Joseon period.
