Abstract |
Korean folk house (or minga) is a representative form of vernacular culture closely associated with the inhabitants’ customs, legends, religion, and philosophy accumulated over the centuries. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the socio-historical relationship between family structure and historical changes of architectural plan in minga based on the field survey concerning vernacular dwellings around Gyeonggi-do province utilizing humanistic survey methodologies. Current Minga is a living place experienced many historical changes over time. In reality, family members have created their own spatial orders to use each room in the house corresponding with their peculiar rural life style. This paper will present how architectural surveyors devised a systematic methodology to collect the base information from architectural heritage and how well organized survey data correlated with local knowledge provided a better understanding of traditional folk houses and helps explore their comprehensive analysis of architectural tradition. |
