Abstract This study attempts to draw out the practical lessons towards sustainable development from the urban planning of using the resource-efficient strategies by analyzing the urban regeneration project('channel hamburg') in Hamburg, Germany. The analysis framework for case study consist of 5 factors which is spatial restructuring, physical restructuring, self-contained city, social & political restructuring, cultural resources. This case study aims to analyze the following four parts : ⅰ) extraction and evaluation of valuable resources in the city area ⅱ) analysing the strategies for using the resources ⅲ) feasibility analysis of resource-efficient strategies in the urban planning ⅳ) system-approach of resource-efficient strategies for urban regeneration. The major findings of this research can be summarized as follows. It is essential to set a context for any proposed resources-efficient action - this context should consider the historic evolution and the previous identification of an area. The resource-efficient urban regeneration is a comprehensive and integrated action which seeks to bring about a lasting recycling in physical environmental, economic and social-cultural condition of area that has been subject to change. Furthermore this research highlights the need for establishing the comprehensive plan for the recycling the resources in city area towards sustainable regeneration project in Korea.
