Abstract |
During the period of colonial Choson, there were a total of 13 To (道) government office buildings, and as few as 12 and as many as 22 Pu (府) government buildings. In the beginning of that period, To and Pu government buildings were mainly housed in pre-existing facilities, but from 1920s they were constructed. I classified the plans of 9 To and 8 Pu buildings constructed in this period to 5 plan types; 山, E, 凸, 一, and the rest(凹 and L). The plan types were not divided as to To or Pu building or the time but related to the scale of the buildings. Two critical elements in deciding the types were wether a meeting room was or not and where the meeting room situated and wether the corridor was one side or centered, and which direction the one-side-corridor faced. The common character in the all types of To and Pu government buildings was that the plan of front division was bilateral symmetry with entrance and entrance hall in the center but that of rear(middle and side) divisions were unrestricted to the bilateral symmetry. But when a Pu building was situated along a curved border line, even the front ward used to curve along the line making heteromorphy of some plan types. |
