Abstract This study intended to typify the boundary characteristics and identify the causes therefrom around the entry road into the temples located near Seoul. The temples near cities have been forced to show changes in the entry space owing to the expansion of cities and show distinct aspects from the traditional ones. For the purpose, this study conducted an empirical analysis with 49 temples located Seoul. They are located in the clout of the city and easily accessible by mass transportation. First, the boundaries of space in the city temples, gates and functionality in the form of this compound appears to be. Second, implication of the religious significance symbolic elements are being placed. Thirdly, a new outer space is created or changed features depending on the nature of the entry space.
