Abstract The cyclic load-deformation relationships in deteriorating range are required to be investigated importantly, in order to prevent collapse of the buildings under earthquake excitation. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the hysteresis behavior of concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns subjected to combination of cyclic bending and variable axial load including deteriorating range. For this purpose, the nonlinear fiber element method with local buckling was carried out and considered using the uni-axial stress and strain relationship for confined concrete and structural steel. The nonlinear fiber element method developed predicts well the hysteresis loops and cumulative plastic energy. On the basis of analytical results, hysteresis behavior could be evaluated, which is related to that under constant axial load and reversed bending.
