Abstract An improved analysis method for the column shortening of tall buildings has been proposed. The analysis method exactly considers the restraining effects of the steel bars as well as the horizontal members such as beams and slabs. Step-by-step method which is considered to be the most exact long-term analysis method for a concrete structure was applied in the proposed analysis method, thus exact displacement and internal forces at any elapsed time are available. The stress redistribution between columns and beams as well as concrete section and steel section is also taken into account. Column shortenings of 70-story reinforced concrete frame-shearwall building were investigated as a numerical example. It is shown that the horizontal members reduce the differential column shortening between adjacent columns and transfer the axial forces of more shortened column to less shortened column.
