Modern society has transformed into more complicated framework with the development of the new media and technology in the 21st Century. The surface design of building also has been changed in trend and material. The Purpose of this study is to analyze the tendency of the surface contemporary architecture and to prove its extended meaning. By researching the perception of surface, the notion of surface is revealed as non-representional boundary between inside and outside. It shows multiple meaning of surface which extends from physical boundary to recognizable one. Through this extended meaning of architectural surface, it is analyzed by the following four architects. Herzog & de Meuron, Toyo Ito, Rem koolhaas, FOA. As a result, it becomes apparent that despite dialectic effects of modern architecture and a condition of complicated modern city, the surface is a result of human sensible experience, and that the meaning of surface becomes rich not by fixed physical dry environment, but various experiments and a new exploration of architectural surface which sympathizes with surroundings. |
