Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to review the formation of the Indochinese Style. In the Indochinese Style, the activities of a French architect and urban planner Ernest Hebrard(1875-1933) are essential. According to some previous studies, his appointment as a Director of Urbanism Department in 1923 in Hanoi is a turning point of Vietnamese modern architectural history. His Indochinese style is an original mixture between Vietnamese and French cultures. However, several other factors influenced the Indochinese Style. That is, the formation of Indochina federal, changing aesthetic attitude from engineering to architecture, changing French colonial policy from assimilation to association, prevail of Art Deco Style. Futhermore I found that there were many good eclectic architecture in Vietnam with the exception of the Indochinese Style. Thus this paper examines the background of the Indochinese Style and explores several good eclectic styles in Vietnamese architecture that existed before and simultaneously with the Indochinese Style. As a result of this study, I found that there is an overemphasis on the Indochinese style and the activities of Ernest Hebrard. |
