Abstract Geographical and historic Busanness, from discourse on Busan Studies, has been defined as marineness, colonial modernism and subalternity. These factors interact with ambivalent and hybrid relationship, which hold both positive and negative aspects like a two-bladed knife. Busan studies imagination of architecture means the ability and endeavor to solve architectural problems in Busan with international, pluralistic and future-oriented perspective. Therefore, architectural Busanness is to represent architecturally the quality of marineness, colonial modernism and subalternity of Busan rather than to intimate stereotyped images relevant to sea. Ambivalence and hybridity, having influenced cultural identity of Busan, are effective strategy for architectural Busanness. Busan studies imagination of architecture contributes to the qualitative change of Busan architecture with vividly real locality. After all, architectural Busanness is the issue of architects' understanding and vision of Busan beyond architectural form. Architectural Busanness is not immutable but changeable identity by architects and Busan people.
