Abstract |
This study was conducted to systematically investigate various extraction structures of gallery environment which can affect visitors' viewing behaviors in art museums, and to provide basic guidelines for constructing effective gallery environment based on a comparative analysis of the structures. For these purposes, psychological experiments applying the repertory grid development method were conducted to investigate the gallery environment of art museums perceived by visitors and gallery designers. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1) According to the procedure of the repertory grid development method, qualitative data on the extraction structure were obtained from a total of 50 subjects. 2) In general, both visitors and gallery designers were found to prefer simple, bright gallery environment, but compared to visitors, gallery designers tended to like gallery environment with relatively many images. 3) The extraction structures of gallery environment in art museums were found to have complex visual mechanism, compared to the interior area of other facilities. 4) After comparing the characteristics of voluntary extraction items by each group, visual differences were found to exist in the extraction structures obtained from the two groups. 5) In the case of the art museums emphasizing pictures on the walls, a relationship between space and gallery presentation was found to affect viewing behaviors significantly. |
