Abstract Meeting room is considered to be a important place where speech security should be guaranteed. Speech security mentioned here is to prevent speech in the meeting room from transmitting to adjacent rooms. To get speech security the airborne sound insulation performance between meeting room and adjacent rooms should be acquired. The rating methods currently used for airborne sound insulation are Weighted Sound Reduction Index (Rw) of ISO and Sound Transmission Class (STC) of ASTM, which have been mainly used for the partitions or building elements for apartment. Sounds interested in apartment comprise of noises from their neighbours such as conversation, TV/Radio or electrical tools and from outdoor such as traffic noise and various kinds of environmental noise. On the other hand objective sound in meeting room is speech, which is different from those in apartment. It is necessary therefore to find appropriate rating method for the wall TL of meeting room. This study aims to validate the existing standard rating methods and to propose more improved rating method in terms of speech intelligibility. It is concluded that the standard rating methods, STC and Rw, are not so good. Some procedures which have been used for speech intelligibility, AI, SII and AC, were compared and appeared to be well correlated with subjective result. Arithmetic average was most successful for the rating of speech intelligibility having highest correlation and is considered that it could be an adequate rating method for the meeting room walls.
